Our Church

The Free Church Unitarian (in Icelandic, Frikirkjusofnudur) was founded in 1928 by a group of 26 theological Unitarian Icelanders led by Rev. Halldor Johnson. The first organizational meeting was held in a chick hatchery!

The present church building, built by the hands of the founding members opened for worship May 26, 1929 with a morning Icelandic service by Rev. Johnson and an evening English service by Rev. A. Kristjannson. Fine music has always been a Free Church tradition. Our Choir was honored to open at the 1995 Unitarian Universalist General Assembly.

Free Church Unitarian has an especially warm atmosphere where old and young mingle as family. Our membership has families, couples, and singles as active members. We welcome and celebrate all adults, children and youth regardless of faith, creed, race, color, ethnic or national origin; sexual orientation, gender, or gender expression; age, mental or physical ability, economic status, or political affiliation.

Our church delights in worshiping and singing together, in parties and having fun together. We also have a strong and responsive social justice program supporting Blaine’s Family Service Center, a free meal for the community on Christmas Day, and monthly contributions to programs of justice in Blaine and in Bellingham.

Hand Carved Chalice

This Flaming Chalice was carved out of Yellow Cedar by Phil Claymore and donated to the Church on April 26, 1981. It hangs on the center wall at the front of the Santuary.
