The Language of Roots
Rev. Tessie Mandeville and Friends
Come and hear a recently rediscovered story, "Grandmother Waits.” As we tell you the story, we’ll reflect, as the elders we are now, on its messages of autonomy, depth, creativity, and what it takes to be a healthy, diverse community. The story will be told by Carrie and Judith, who co-wrote it more than 30 years ago, and woven together with poetry, music, and songs by Tessie and Su. This promises to be an engaging and wonderful service.

Keeping Our Joy (While the Dumpster Burns)
Rev. Catharine Clarenbach
Portland, Oregon has instigated a plague of frogs upon the soldiers of the Pharaoh of the moment. From Portland, Oregon to Portland, Maine, demonstrators have been taking hold of joy with both hands as a way to say No to authoritarianism. Join us as we explore some ways to maintain joy, one of the most important ways to resist the despair and compliance that threatens us all.
Rev. Catharine Clarenbach comes to us most recently (very recently indeed) from Portland, Oregon, where she regularly joined other clergy and people of faith protesting the presence of ICE in the city. She attended Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC and was very involved with All Souls Unitarian and their visioning process, adult spiritual development, and capital campaigns during her time in seminary. She also served as All Souls's Director of Pastoral Care and Membership. She came from DC in 2013, where she served First Unitarian Church of Portland as an intern minister. Rev. Catharine continues to unpack her new apartment in Bellingham with a will, and looks forward to building community here in the very northwest of the US Pacific Northwest.

Still Thankful
Rev. Barbara Gilday
When things are falling apart, it is easy to go into panic, avoidance, helplessness, blame, numbness or any number of negative emotions. Buddhist teachings tell us to accept and be grateful for the current situation and mindful of what can emerge out of loss. Like the butterfly, it takes time. The process itself is not pretty, but the outcome can be greater than we ever could have dreamed. Can we be open to what is emerging?
